The 1974 Royal Shakespeare Company's production of William Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes was the first London production for 70 years.
The play directed by Frank Dunlop had John Wood as Sherlock Holmes and Philip Locke played Professor Moriarty. The Times described the occasion as a sumptious evening; and continued ...what pleasure to creep under a blanket of real old-fashioned London fog and watch the the two master-minds battling it out in the well-bred Victorian underworld.
