£10.00
In this issue: 21 reasons why Worthing should have a public library: an 1892 campaign for our times, Dr Annebella Pollen / Friendship cards, Rosie Temperley / Sappho to suffrage: women who dared, Professor Senia Paseta / Wilhelm Busch: forefather of the comic strip, Ray Bishop / Quarterly notes from the travelling ephemerist, Mrs Pepys / Collecting on a shoestring: Bookmarks, Sylvia Bunting
The view that ephemera can bring the past to life more vividly and often with greater particularity than many other forms of documentation, is illustrated well in this Issue 182 of The Ephemerist. Two examples make for fascinating reading — the bill poster, painstakingly restored and photographed for reproduction in this journal on page 5, which tells the story of the Worthing campaign in 1892 to keep the public library open, and ‘Suffragetto’ the board game currently on display at the Bodleian and reproduced in this journal on page 17, where the players are invited to imagine suffragettes and policemen battling it out around the House of Commons and The Albert Hall, avoiding the Hospital and Prison. As always, we include items from eclectic ephemera finder Mrs Pepys, and gems from Members’ own collections. Enjoy ! The Editor
