Victorian album of pressed flowers, leaves, ferns and grasses

Spa Album

  • Double page spread from Victorian album of pressed flowers,
    leaves and grasses 1867 - 1894
  • Page size 114 x 184mm (4½ x 7¼in)

Q We were very intrigued to learn of a pressed flower album from the early 1830s and that it was “an example of a 'Spa album' typical of the period”. Can anyone suggest a definition for a Spa album ?

A I am told that Spa albums were so called because they were made by stationers binders in Spa towns and sold over the counter. They were often covered in wallpaper which was sourced from a local wallpaper manufacturer.
